Nina Hall and Kathy Baker
|
You’ve seen Mrs. Nina Hall flying in a helicopter at 95. At 98 she went over to the T-CO Alternative Fuels training center and learned how to help improve our environment and reduce our dependency on fossil fuel by learning how biodiesel is made from pure vegetable oil and uses for its by-products.
At the T-Co training center she and the other residents have learned about the process of making biodiesel. Biodiesel is made from pure or used cooking oils, and unlike the familiar fossil diesel, biodiesel is non-toxic, it is renewable, it is not harmful to humans, animals, or the environment and is safe to handle. If biodiesel is spilled, it is biodegradable and breaks down quickly into harmless substances.
In this picture she is simulating pouring pure virgin vegetable oil into the vegetable oil tank of a modular biodiesel unit located at the T-CO training center.

The main by-product produced in the process of making biodiesel is glycerin which has hundreds of uses, among which is glycerin soap, and candles.
The goal is to learn how to incorporate the use of safe environment friendly products that can be made from glycerin and use them in the Green Terrace resident activity program. One, and only one, example is learning to make glycerin soap which the residents plan to sell on E-bay.
See how they are meeting this goal.

Kim Strickland, Green Terrace Activities Director
|
The administrator of the Green Terrace facility, Kathy Baker, plans to expand the activity program with assistance and input from the Georgia Agriculture Innovation Center located in Tifton, Georgia.
Kathy says, "With this project everybody wins". Most everyone would like to contribute in some way to improving our environment but may not have been given the opportunity until now, especially senior citizens. Now, as more and more people can become involved with our activity projects the more we all can help. Not only do we learn by doing through these projects, we also create a fresh approach to activities programs for our residents, while doing so we help clean up our environment, reduce our dependency on fossil fuel, improve our economy, create markets and uses for glycerin, the list goes on and on.
